Pheromone Maxxing: How to Increase Natural Pheromones Correctly
Pheromone maxxing done right. How to increase your natural pheromones through sleep, androgen-focused nutrition, heavy lifting, sauna, and skin microbiome care.
Most guys want the shortcut in a bottle.
I run Royal Pheromones. Liquid Alchemy Labs makes the formulas we sell, and I wear this stuff every day. It works. But I am going to tell you something a store owner is not supposed to say.
Your body makes the signal. The bottle only turns it up.
If what you are putting out is flat, a cologne has nothing to work with. If it is strong, even a light application hits hard. So before you buy anything, fix the thing underneath.
That is what this is. No product talk. Just what I did, what it cost me, and what happened.
Can Humans Actually Produce and Smell Pheromones?
People get stuck on the word pheromone. In insects, one molecule can set off an automatic response. People are not that simple. So in medical papers, you will often see human scent signals called putative chemosignals instead.
The name matters less than what these compounds do. A review in Facts, Views & Vision in ObGyn looks at 16-androstene steroids. It covers changes in mood, the body’s stress response, and hormone markers in people of the opposite sex.
The main steroid molecules men put out are:
- Androstenone: Signals dominance, physical presence, and social boundaries.
- Androsterone: Signals that you are steady, safe to rely on, and able to protect.
- Androstadienone: Found in fresh male sweat and semen. It raises salivary cortisol and alertness while helping women focus on positive emotions.
Your body makes these compounds from steroid hormones. When your hormone health slips, what comes off your skin changes too. For the bigger picture, read how human pheromones actually work. These molecules will not force anyone to feel attracted to you. They can still shape what someone picks up when they get close.
How Your Body Produces Natural Pheromones
You have two kinds of sweat glands: eccrine and apocrine.
Eccrine glands are all over your body. They release water and salt to cool you down. They do not make the scent signals we are talking about.
Apocrine glands sit mostly in your armpits, groin, chest, and behind your ears. They empty into hair roots, not straight onto your skin. What comes out is a thick fluid with proteins, fats, and steroids made from androgens.
That fluid has no smell at first. A study in the Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology looked at the odorless steroids in apocrine sweat. It found that skin bacteria must break them down before compounds like androstenone and androstenol can get into the air.
The process starts with your hormones. Your body turns cholesterol from food into pregnenolone. Your adrenal glands and testes then make DHEA, androstenedione, testosterone, and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Byproducts of those androgens travel through your blood to the apocrine glands. Make less upstream and your glands have less to release.
How to Increase Natural Pheromones with Sleep
If you want to raise your natural output, start with sleep. It costs nothing, and it is the thing most guys cut first.
You do not make sex hormones at the same rate all day. Most testosterone and androgen production happens while you sleep without a break. It peaks during early rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Cut the night short and you cut into that window.
The research is hard to ignore. In a study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association, healthy young men slept five hours a night for one week. Their daytime testosterone fell 10% to 15%. The researchers said their hormone levels looked roughly ten to fifteen years older.
Less androgen in your blood means fewer steroid compounds reach your skin. Your apocrine glands cannot put out what they do not get.
And people can see the lack of sleep on your face. In research published in Royal Society Open Science, people looked at photos of sleep-deprived faces. They rated those faces as less attractive, less healthy, and harder to approach. Your scent and your face are telling the same story when you are exhausted.
For better sleep and hormone output:
- Go to bed and wake up at the same times all seven days.
- Cut blue light sixty minutes before bed.
- Keep your bedroom about 65 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit to help you get deep sleep.
- Skip alcohol on weeknights. It breaks up sleep and cuts into the later REM cycles where androgen production peaks.
Foods That Increase Pheromones: The Nutritional Floor
Food sets the floor for your hormones. You cannot build high androgen output on refined carbs and industrial vegetable oils. Your body needs fat to make steroid hormones.
Cholesterol is where every steroid hormone starts. Low-fat diets bring down free testosterone and the androgen compounds that come after it. Cut fat too far and your apocrine glands lose raw material.
Foods That Boost Androgen Precursors
Eat whole foods that give your body what it needs to make steroids. Start here:
| Food Source | Active Nutrient | Endocrine Mechanism |
|---|---|---|
| Whole Eggs | Cholesterol, Choline | Direct substrate for pregnenolone and cellular membrane synthesis. |
| Grass-Fed Ruminant Beef | Saturated Fat, Zinc, Iron | Zinc serves as a primary enzymatic cofactor for androgen conversion. |
| Wild Oysters | Zinc, Copper, Selenium | High bioavailable zinc content supports luteinizing hormone release. |
| Wild Salmon & Sardines | Omega-3 Fats (EPA/DHA) | Reduces systemic inflammation and optimizes androgen receptor sensitivity. |
| Cruciferous Vegetables | Indole-3-Carbinol, DIM | Aids liver metabolism of excess estrogen metabolites. |
| Pomegranate & Citrus | Bioflavonoids, Boron | Boron reduces sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), freeing active androgens. |
Animal fats give you building blocks. Broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower help your liver clear extra estrogen byproducts. That leaves androgens a better shot at binding to the tissues where you need them.
Keep carbs low and slow. Red meat, olive oil and coconut oil should carry most of your calories.
Keto and Fasting Reset the Whole Thing
Coming off years of junk food? Keto plus fasting is the fastest fix you have.
Here is why it works.
Eat carbs all day and your insulin never comes down. High insulin raises a protein called SHBG. SHBG grabs your testosterone and holds onto it.
So the testosterone is there. You just cannot use it.
Cut the carbs and insulin drops. SHBG lets go. That testosterone is yours again.
Fasting does the same job from the other side. Skip breakfast and your growth hormone climbs. Your insulin gets a real break, which it never gets on a normal day of eating every few hours.
Sixteen hours is plenty. You do not need three-day fasts. And do not stack a hard fast on top of a hard training week, because that is where men burn out and quit.
Eat in an eight hour window. Keep the fat high. Let your body sort the rest out.
Drink more water than you think you need. Your urine should be pale. Dry skin does not broadcast anything.
Minerals matter too. The pheromones that reach your skin need sulfur and zinc to get there, so eat food that actually contains them.
On supplements: guys swear by tongkat ali and ashwagandha. Ashwagandha is the better of the two, mostly for stress. Neither one is the thing. Sleep, food, training and body fat are the thing. A pill on top of those is a rounding error.
Foods and Compounds That Suppress Your Signal
What you leave out matters as much as what you eat. Long-term inflammation changes the oil on your skin and can spoil your natural scent. For more on keeping that scent healthy, read how to smell more attractive naturally.
Watch out for these:
- Industrial Seed Oils: Oxidized linoleic acid in soybean, corn, and cottonseed oils drives inflammation. Use butter, beef tallow, or cold-pressed olive oil instead.
- Refined Sugars: Sugar spikes your blood glucose and insulin. Keep insulin high for long enough and SHBG rises, leaving less testosterone for your body to use.
- Heavy Alcohol Intake: Alcohol is toxic to the testes. It also raises aromatase activity, which turns more of your androgens into estrogen.
- Processed Soy Isolates: Eating a lot of concentrated soy protein isolate every day can make androgen receptors less active in some people.
- Adderall and Stimulants: These are the worst on this list for how you come across. They keep you in fight-or-flight all day. Your stress hormones stay up, your sweat changes, and people read anxiety off you before you open your mouth. You gain focus and lose presence. If you have a prescription, that is between you and your doctor. Just know what it costs you in the room.
- Processed Slop: Packaged food piles seed oils and sugar together and gives you barely any minerals. It can undo the work you put in elsewhere.
Resistance Training and Post-Workout Output
Hard training changes your baseline and what comes off your skin right after a workout. Lifting changes your body fat, helps you handle insulin, and gives your muscles more places for androgens to bind.
Big lifts give you the strongest hormone response. Squats, deadlifts, overhead presses, and weighted chin-ups make a lot of muscle work at once. That brings a short-term rise in growth hormone and androgens.
Keep it hard and manageable:
- Train three to four days a week with compound movements.
- Keep working sessions to 45 to 65 minutes.
- Do not grind through daily workouts past 75 minutes. That keeps cortisol high.
You do not need a barbell. HIIT gets you the same hormone response. So does hard bodyweight work.
I used indoor bouldering instead of lifting for a long stretch and my baseline held fine. Climbing is just pulling your own bodyweight as hard as you can, over and over, with short rests. Your body cannot tell the difference.
Pick the hard thing you will actually keep showing up for.
Keep cardio easy enough to sustain. Two to three zone-two sessions a week, like incline walking or light cycling, build tiny blood vessels near your skin. Better blood flow helps move oxygen and hormone building blocks to your skin and apocrine glands.
Body Fat: The 13 to 16 Percent Window
Your body fat sets the ceiling on everything else.
Fat tissue holds an enzyme called aromatase. Aromatase turns your testosterone into estrogen. More fat, more of that conversion.
That is why two guys can make the same amount of testosterone and come across completely differently.
Aim for thirteen to sixteen percent. Lean enough to keep the conversion down, fed enough to train hard and sleep well.
Do not chase single digits. That is a bodybuilding goal, not a pheromone goal. Staying that lean takes a deficit so harsh it spikes your stress hormones and tanks the testosterone you were trying to protect.
The Post-Workout Broadcast Window
Your scent comes off your skin strongest in the two hours after hard exercise.
While you train, your apocrine glands send fresh fluid into your hair roots. As you cool down, heat helps carry its airborne compounds into the space around you. If you have a date or another important event, lift two to three hours beforehand. Rinse with cool water so you clear off sweat without stripping your skin bare.
A sauna pushes this further. Spend 15 to 20 minutes in a dry sauna at 170 to 180 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat sets off heat shock proteins, helps your body make nitric oxide, and flushes your pores. Finish with a quick lukewarm shower to wash off mineral residue while leaving your skin oils in place.
Cortisol Routing: Why Chronic Stress Shuts Down Your Broadcast
Stress does more than make you feel bad. When it sticks around, your pheromone output drops. Part of the reason is called the pregnenolone steal.
Your adrenal glands and testes both start with pregnenolone to make hormones. Stay stuck in fight-or-flight and your adrenal glands put more of it toward cortisol and adrenaline. Your body deals with the threat first and reproduction second.
That leaves less pregnenolone for androgens. Your apocrine glands get less raw material as a result.
Stress sweat is different from workout sweat, too. Sweat made under severe stress has more airborne organic acids. People read that scent as anxiety and tension, not ease. That is why social pheromones create warmth and approachability only when your stress is under control.
To protect those hormone building blocks:
- Walk outside for 15 minutes within an hour of waking. It helps set your morning cortisol rhythm.
- Stop checking work messages and stressful media at least two hours before bed.
- When tension creeps into your neck and jaw, breathe slowly through your nose and let your belly move.
Semen Retention and Pheromone Output
Most guys skip this one. It moves the needle faster than anything else on the list.
Your pheromones are made in your balls. They ride in your semen. The versions that come out through your skin pull from that same supply.
Drain it a few times a day and there is less left to send out. Simple as that.
One to two weeks is the peak. A 2003 study out of Zhejiang University found a 145% jump in testosterone on day seven of abstinence. That is right where guys land in practice.
After two weeks it levels off and you are just white-knuckling it. No point.
The real mistake is going several times a day. That drains your energy, burns through your zinc and wears down your testosterone receptors.
You cannot out-train an empty tank.
Does TRT Shut Down Your Natural Pheromone Output?
Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) has gotten popular. What clinics do not always explain is what outside testosterone does to the rest of your hormones.
When you take testosterone, the level in your blood rises. A part of your brain called the hypothalamus sees it and stops sending out Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH). Then your pituitary gland stops making Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH).
Without LH telling them to work, the Leydig cells in your testes stop making testosterone. Your testes shrink, testosterone inside them drops sharply, and your own steroid production shuts down.
Your blood test can show high total and free testosterone while your testes are doing very little. A good share of the pheromone byproducts comes from active production in the testes. That includes certain forms of androstenol and androstenone. It is why guys on TRT alone often say their natural scent feels flat.
If you are on TRT, a doctor can use Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) to help prevent that shutdown. hCG acts like LH and tells the Leydig cells to keep working. That helps preserve testicle size, your own hormone building blocks, and your natural scent output. Do it under your doctor’s care.
Before you commit to lifelong hormone replacement, get sleep, food, and training in order. A lot of guys find their natural output comes back without treatment. To see how the main scent molecules differ, read androstenone vs androstenol.
Protecting the Axillary Microbiome: Your Antenna
You can get your hormones right and still have a weak signal. That happens if the bacteria on your skin are gone.
Your armpits have their own mix of bacteria. Apocrine fluid comes out odorless, with steroids bound to amino acids. Bacteria on your skin break those bonds so the steroids can get into the air.
Research in eLife found how this happens. Proteins and enzymes in Staphylococcus hominis turn odorless apocrine compounds into pungent, airborne thioalcohols and steroid odorants. The enzymes include carbon-sulfur lyase.
Without the right bacteria, those compounds stay in the fluid on your skin. They do not get into the air for anyone else to pick up.
Two common hygiene habits get in the way:
- Harsh Antibacterial Soaps: Daily triclosan and other germ-killing washes strip away helpful bacteria. That leaves room for bacteria that cause bad odor.
- Aluminum Antiperspirants: Aluminum salts plug both apocrine and eccrine sweat ducts. The steroid-rich fluid cannot come out.
Restoring Your Skin Ecosystem
Here is how I would handle it:
- Drop Antibacterial Cleansers: Switch to a mild, pH-balanced, fragrance-free bar soap made with natural fats.
- Shower Daily, Water Only on the Pits: This is the part everyone gets backwards. You still shower. Every day. Soap your groin, feet and hands like normal, then hit your armpits with warm water and a clean washcloth and nothing else. Not showering is the dumb version of this. Keeping soap off two square inches of skin is the version that works.
- Use Aluminum-Free Deodorants: Pick a simple deodorant with magnesium hydroxide, zinc ricinoleate, or essential oils. It can keep bad odor down without plugging your pores.
- Time Your Showers Before Events: Do not scrub down right before a date or gathering. You wash away the active scent on your skin and start from zero for several hours. Shower four to six hours before you go so your skin bacteria have time to work on fresh sweat.
- Trim, Do Not Shave: Armpit hair gives airborne steroids more surface to spread from. Shave it all off and you lose that. Use a body trimmer to keep it neat instead.
Timeline: When to Expect Measurable Changes
Give this time. Sleep, hormones, and the bacteria on your skin do not all change overnight.
Week 1: Fluid and Autonomic Reset
After five to seven days of steady eight-hour nights, you may wake up with more energy. The dark circles under your eyes start to fade. Fresh sweat also loses some of that sharp, sour smell tied to high cortisol.
Weeks 2 to 3: Endocrine Adaptation
By week three of heavy lifting and eating enough healthy fat, daytime androgen output steadies. Regular sauna sessions also bring more blood to your skin.
This is also when your armpits turn the corner, and it is where most guys quit.
You have been stripping those bacteria with soap every morning for years. They need a couple of weeks to come back. The first few days of water only can smell worse, not better.
That is the damage clearing out. It is not the protocol failing. Push through it.
Week 4 and Beyond: Full Baseline Integration
Around a month in, your hormones and skin bacteria settle into a new baseline. Get the food right and you do not just stop smelling bad. You smell good without putting anything on.
You will not notice it yourself. You go nose-blind to your own smell. Other people tell you.
A girl asked me what cologne I was wearing. I told her I was not wearing any.
I watched her sit with that for a second and her eyes went glassy. Full deer in the headlights.
Nothing I have ever sprayed on got that reaction. Because the answer to her question was me.
That is the whole point of the protocol. Bottled pheromones are an amplifier, and an amplifier multiplies whatever signal you hand it.
Keep a simple notebook. Write down your sleep, training, food, and anything you notice when you are around people. Over time, you can see whether the weeks you stick with this are also the weeks talking to people feels easier.
Layering Bottled Pheromones on a Strong Baseline
Once your natural baseline is solid, the right pheromone cologne for men has more to work with.
Think of it like turning up an audio system. If the sound going in is bad, more volume just makes the bad sound louder. Get your natural signal clear first. Then a well-made cologne can make your presence sharper.
Want to try a bottle? Our guide to the best pheromone colognes for men in 2026 can help you pick a mix that fits. For a more commanding presence, an androstenone cologne can back up the authority you already put out.
Put it on clean skin: neck first, then clavicle, wrists, or a washed underarm. Our guide on how to wear pheromone cologne shows you where and how much, so you do not overdo it.
Your habits build the base. Once that is working, the right bottle can make it hit harder.
Frequently asked
Can you actually increase your natural pheromone production?
Yes. You cannot change your underlying genetics, but you can maximize your phenotypic output. By optimizing sleep, maintaining healthy fat intake, lifting heavy weights, and protecting your skin's microbiome, you maximize the androgen precursors delivered to and metabolized by your apocrine glands.
What foods increase pheromones most effectively?
Foods rich in bioavailable cholesterol, saturated fats, and zinc provide the greatest support for steroidogenesis. Prioritize whole eggs, grass-fed beef, oysters, wild salmon, and cruciferous vegetables. Eliminate refined sugars and industrial seed oils, which promote systemic inflammation.
Does showering wash away your natural pheromones?
Yes. Washing with harsh soaps physically strips both the volatile steroid molecules and the beneficial skin bacteria that produce them. Keep showering daily, but use gentle fragrance-free soap on your body and warm water alone on your underarms. Time the shower four to six hours before an event rather than immediately before walking out the door.
Does working out increase your pheromones?
Yes. Heavy compound resistance training stimulates transient androgen spikes and increases peripheral blood flow. In the 30 to 90 minutes following a workout, your apocrine glands secrete fresh fluids that evaporate as your skin cools, creating an acute peak in scent projection.
Does masturbation or frequent ejaculation ruin your pheromone levels?
Yes. The 16-androstenes are produced in the testes and carried in seminal fluid, so frequent daily ejaculation keeps that pool empty while draining energy, straining zinc reserves and blunting androgen receptor sensitivity. One to two weeks of retention is the peak window, which matches the 145% testosterone spike measured on day seven of abstinence. Past two weeks the returns flatten out.
Can women consciously smell male pheromones?
Most people do not consciously identify human chemosignals as a specific perfume or cologne note. Instead, these molecules trigger subconscious neurological and endocrine shifts, subtly altering emotional processing, heart rate, and attraction markers without conscious awareness of the smell.
Do I still need pheromone cologne if my natural output is high?
You do not strictly need it, but it provides targeted control. A high-quality pheromone cologne adds specific, concentrated molecules like androstenone or androstenol to your natural baseline, allowing you to tailor your chemical impression for dates, meetings, or casual social settings.
